Getting to know Mae Hong Sorn
Mae Hong Sorn province was in the past largely isolated to the rest of Thailand due to the difficult traveling
conditions. Most of the people ( Shan, Karen, Lisu, etc. who came from Myanmar and China ) spoke their languages
and retained their way of living and traditions. Now Mae Hong Son is no longer isolated from the world, and the
changes are becoming more and more visible in materials, languages and way of living. From Chiang Mai people can
travel to Mae Hong Son town by land in two routes: the northern road passing the town "Pai" ( a center of eco nature
travel, with lot of budget guesthouses and trekking operators ) and the more longer southern road passing "Mae
Sriang" near the river Thanlwin which borders Thailand and Myanmar. There are daily flight connection with Chiang
Mai which takes only 30 minutes.
Here, you can take up trekking trips including rafting, hiking, hilltribe village stay and elephant ride ranging from 2
days to several days. Mountain climbing trips and longer village stay ( or farmland stay ) can also be arranged.
However what we need to take care is not to destroy the natural environment, the traditional living and thinking of
the local native people. We could help the villagers in many ways to attain a healthy living, good education, know
how to retain their natural environment
